Is it wrong for someone of the male persuasion such as myself to sing out loud in his car to the line "it's time to be a big girl now" (or, actually, noooowwwwww)? I can't get this song out of my head. Damn you, you white girls with rhythm.
Last month I posted on rock festivals. One of my favorite blogs has a good rundown of the popular festivals this summer (go here to read the full list). Next weekend is Bonnaroo, in Manchester, Tennessee. The two best spots? Check out the What Stage from 3:15 - 11:00. Starting with Ziggy Marley (one of my personal favorites) then to Ben Harper & Innocent Criminals, then finishing the night with The Police. Then on Sunday it's all about the Which Stage (by the way, Bonnaroo names their stages What, Which, This, That, The Other, and Somethin' Else). The lineup starts with Pete Yorn, then Wolfmother, The Decemberists, and The White Stripes end the day. For those not lucky enough to be there, it will be streaming live on AT&Tblueroom, and no doubt will be found all over Youtube in two weeks!
Last month I posted about rock festivals. The London Times has a running listing of festivals in the UK this summer. Go here to check out the list for June.
After reading down the list, I'm tempted to book a few round-trip tickets. The festival line-up includes:
Arctic Monkeys
Bloc Party
Amy Winehouse
Lilly Allen
Paul Weller
The Who
Kaiser Chiefs
The Waterboys
Marley Brothers (Steven & Damien)
The Killers
And that's only one stage. On another stage will be Modest Mouse, Byork, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Coldwar Kids, among many others. There is even an acoustic stage. One guy I discovered, Eric Bibb, will be playing that stage.
If this isn't the best line-up of any festival this summer, it's at least in the top 3. On second thought, it's number 1. It's three days long, and looking at the line-up, each stage must be almost non-stop music. Well done Glastonbury.
Here's Morrissey from a past festival at Glastonbury.
A great album for this summer - Fall Out Boy's "Infinity on High". The first standout track for me is the 17-word titled "I'm Like a Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying to Get You Off (Me and You)". Put this one on your beach soundtrack now. I'm putting it on mine.
Another CD to load into the Ipod is The Shins "Wincing the Night Away".
Check out the video for "Australia" on their website.
Their opening for "Australia" has a little Def Leppard influence. Sorry, I would have attached a sample, but the file didn't want to upload. You could go here to see it too.
The song "Phantom Limb" has a nostalgic feel to it. You can even hear some Beach Boys in it - woh, woh, woh, woh...!
Chief Parrothead Jimmy Buffett made a surprise appearance at Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholders meeting on Saturday. According to reports,
"Mr. Buffett" was introduced as debonair, talented and other
superlatives, and out stepped singer Jimmy Buffett, wearing a Hawaiian
shirt and shorts and bearing a guitar, who proclaimed himself a distant
cousin to Warren Buffett. Jimmy Buffett said genetic testing was done,
and the question of who will inherit Warren Buffett's company has been
answered. Jimmy Buffett said "Since blood is thicker than water, I'm
your new chairman." Jimmy Buffett later said he was kidding."
Jimmy then did a reworked version of Margaritaville, mentioning Berkshire and Omaha steaks among other references to the occasion.
Jimmy is a wealthy man, but Warren is off the charts. Warren is also highly intelligent and has a great sense of humor. These are two men I greatly admire. I look on Warren Buffett in some of the same ways I look at Ernest Hemingway. My opinion of Hemingway is based on biographies I've read of him, his books, and other accounts of his life. I've been able to hear Warren, being still alive, in his own words. It may seem strange to compare a business and investment titan with a famous writer, but of course Warren is also a famous writer. Of shareholder's letters. It's not "To Have and Have Not", but interesting nonetheless.
Here's Jimmy at the Dunes Preserve benefit on Anguilla in March.
I wanted to keep this one a secret because I thought it would make great movie music. Specifically for a script that I might write. But I just listened to it again tonight and just think it's too much fun not to share. Nada Surf is a band I've never listened much to, but I just started playing their 2005 CD "The Weight is A Gift", and it's really good. You may remember them for the song "Popular" from 1996, that spoken-word song about high school.
They also recorded a version of the 80's song "If You Leave" by OMD for an episode of "The O.C.", a show I have to say I watched weekly. They also have a song, "Always Love" from "The Weight is a Gift" on the soundtrack for Disturbia.
This CD is a great Saturday-morning-gear-up-to-do-something-unplanned kind soundtrack. This track should help you plan your Saturday evening. Enjoy.
